New announcements from the Minister of Immigration

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Sean Fraser, made four new announcements on September 1st. The new announcements are intended to reduce application backlogs and shorten processing times.

The new announcements are as follows:

  1. Exempting inside Canada permanent and temporary residence applicants from requiring immigration medical examination which would help applicants save time and money while reducing processing times;
  2. Creating a %100 digital application process for most permanent residence programs from September 23 and allowing more applicants to submit online applications on IRCC portals;
  3. Regularly updating application processing times online;
  4. Expanding the online application status tracker to seven more permanent residence and temporary residence programs; and
  5. Modernizing the citizenship program to allow more applicants to submit their applications online.

The Minister also announced that IRCC plans to hire 1,250 new employees by the end of this fall to reduce wait times.

Information and details are expected to be announced soon.

Canadian Citizenship Applications

Since last year, IRCC has created an online portal for certain eligible applicants to submit their citizenship applications online. However, this online application tool is only available to individuals who are single, over the age of 18 and are applying without a representative. With the new announcements made by Sean Fraser, it is expected that the eligibility criteria for online citizenship application would expand to allow more individuals to apply online.
