New Changes to off-campus working for international students

International students studying in Canada are legally authorized to work off campus, part-time, for 20 hours per week. This policy allows students to support themselves financially while staying focused on their studies when classes are in session. However, on October 7th, 2022, the Immigration Minister, Mr. Sean Fraser, announced a new temporary measure for international students to be able to work more hours for a limited time.

Canada hosted over 620,000 international students in 2021 and processed 452,000 study permit applications in the first eight months of 2022, making the country one of the leading destinations for international students

Canada is currently facing a historical unemployment rate of 5.2 percent as of September 2022; this new temporary measure aims to reduce the country’s labour shortage by authorizing international students to work more than 20 hours per week. At present, there are nearly one million job vacancies that need to be filled. This temporary measure will be effective from November 2022 until December 31, 2023. Foreign nationals who have submitted their study permit applications as of October 7th, 2022, will also be allowed to work more than 20 hours per week once they receive their study permits.

Working in Canada can be very beneficial for international students as it not only helps them to support themselves financially but also helps them gain Canadian experience, build a network and help them plan their careers.
