Canada is set to make it easier for Iranians on temporary visas to extend their stay in the country, according to a recent announcement by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Under the new measure, Iranian nationals who are currently in Canada on a temporary basis can apply to extend their stay if their status is set to expire within the next three months. The measure is aimed at helping Iranians who are unable to return to their home country due to the ongoing conflict and instability.
Starting on March 1, 2023, the Canadian government will be implementing the following measures to provide support for Iranians:
- Making it easier for those in Canada on temporary visas for work, study, or visit to apply for an extension from inside Canada;
- Processing applications from Iranians residing in Canada on a priority basis;
- Introducing a new open work permit pathway for Iranians who are already living in Canada. An open work permit enables foreign nationals to work in any profession and for any employer they choose;
- Waiving specific processing fees for Iranians who want to extend their stay in Canada; and
- Waiving passport and permanent resident travel document fees for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are currently in Iran and wish to leave.
These measures will be in place until February 28, 2024.
The IRCC has stated that the new measure is aimed at helping Iranians who are in Canada on a temporary basis and who are facing difficulties returning to their home country due to the current situation in Iran.
