The new College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants is launched! What can this change?

College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants – In June 2019, the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) was created by an act passed by the Canadian Parliament. On November 23, 2021, the College officially replaced the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC).

We are confident that this is a huge step forward to a better future for anyone who wants to hire an immigration consultant for their application. The new College has greater authority to regulate licensed immigration consultants and prosecute those who provide immigration services without being licensed.

One of the new measures for existing immigration consultants (RCICs) includes having the RCIC-IRB class of licence as of July 2022 if they wish to represent clients at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) tribunals.

If you wish to retain an RCIC to represent you in this matter, you should ensure that they hold this class of license and are competent enough to handle your case.

For those who are not currently an RCIC and wish to practice Canadian immigration law, the requirements to become an RCIC have changed. Under the new regulations, all applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and a post-graduate diploma from Queen University’s Faculty of Law or the University of Montreal, as well as a CLB score of at least 9.

These requirements will restrict and limit the number of individuals allowed to practice immigration law which is beneficial for anyone using the services of immigration consultants.
